Fish or Cut Bait

With the end of the 2010-11 season in sight, it's time to gauge who's going to be amongst your keeper selections heading into next season. Of course which players end up staying on your rosters depends greatly on your league make up, number of keepers and your own personal risk tolerance. I’ve compiled a list of players that may have some question marks as protectable players in limited keeper leagues heading into next season. This is part one of two, with the second one coming tomorrow.

Let me get this out of the way right now, I hate fishing. The score card is simple here; Fish means I find the player in a favourable light as a keeper for next season. Cut Bait means I'd rather throw this one back into the water and hope for a bigger catch. Be aware that I tend to be quite conservative with my protected players, preferring the vast majority of my keepers to come down on the proven side of the ledger.

My Top 10 Fantasy Goats of 2010-11 is now posted over at Puck Daddy.   15-year-old Aaron Ekblad has been given "exceptional player" status by the OHL, a status that has not been given to a player since John Tavares.   He's still signed to play in the KHL for three more years, but [...]

Autobot or Decepticon?

I normally don’t talk goaltenders. Justin Goldman does such a good job that it seems fairly redundant to do so. I do however have this theory on goaltenders in the current NHL, the gist of it being that goalies are the most replaceable players in the NHL. I believe there are probably a hundred goalies currently playing around the globe that could step into an NHL lineup and win games right now. All they need is an opportunity and a little bit of luck. That is why every year we see the same story; rookie goalie comes out of nowhere to put together an amazing run helping to push his team to new heights. It never fails. Every season there is at least one rags to riches or before his time story.

My take on Crosby being cleared for practice and Ray Shero's announcement that he probably won't play in the regular season and may not play in the postseason? Mind games. I say Sid plays at least two regular season games, perhaps as many as four. In the meantime, the opposition is psyched out right [...]

Changing Your Fantasy Fate (Part Four)

If you are in a tight league where every little stat matters, making the smart adds/drops could determine whether you are the league champion or just another one of the nine, 11 or 13 disappointed losers. At this point of the season it’s not about what your players have done for you all season long, it’s all about what your player will do for you in the next four weeks that will determine your fantasy fate.

The Detroit Free Press is reporting no suspension for Todd Bertuzzi. Well...   The Blues have activated Vladimir Sobotka from injured reserve, and Andy Strickland reports that Oshie has been suspended by the team for two games. No further details given.   Sooo is Teemu Selanne going to start aging soon?   Sooo is [...]

It seemed very fitting that a School of Block lesson fell on the same day that Dobber and I announced our partnership and acquisition of Goalie Post. If you didn’t read the Goalie Guild's press release yet, be sure to check it out right here. And just like that, I have made the dive. I am proud to become the poolie’s newest guide to starting goaltenders and I can’t wait to take over a fully-functional platform that will now house my daily fantasy goalie analysis, advice and insight.

I was impressed with Mark Mancari's stint this last time. Buffalo just sent him back down after he got five points in 10 games. As a giant of a man - 6-3, 225 - Mancari stands a good chance of making the team in the fall. He's 25, so it will be next year [...]
