who would you draft first in a one year league?

in a one year league which would you take? i realize that in a keeper crosby is the obvious choice but in a one year league who would be the best player to take?

position wise, i'd think ovechkin first cuz LW is a harder position to fill compared to C

goalies take up 40% of the cats and while you have 12 players helping you get points, you only have 2 goalies to help you get good stats every week.

Malkin could get dual eligibility.

what are your guy's thoughts?

Drafting 1st in a snake means it is a long time before making your second pick. I think you have to take one of the big three with the 1st overall pick. Ovechkin would not be a bad choice first overall as he gets you that tough LW out right away. With Yahoo, I get leery of waiting for multi-position assignments. Guys like Gomez seem to fall into the middle rounds for some reason allowing to you to fill your C slots with quality guys in the middle rounds.

Coming back there will likely be some Tier 2 goalies that you could snag back to back. A tandem of Bryzgalov/Kipper would look pretty nice in my book with the next two picks(24/25). Nick Backstrom would not be a bad grab either. I would make sure I added Harding towards the back end of the draft as protection.

I hate the 1st overall pick in a snake draft. You get the stud, but kind of get shafted as all the rest of your picks are back to back with 22 selections in between.

Ovechkin, but only since you have positional requirements. Otherwise it's Crosby all the way. You should still be able to get back-to-back quality(albeit not elite)goaltending talent in the late 2nd and obviously early 3rd round. But you should also learn the drafting tendencies of the members of your league. For instance, my league chooses either Brodeur and/or Luongo in the first round all the time, then after the 1st 2 picks of the second(usually Spezza & Kovalchuk), their is a bum rush for the rest of the elite. Learn the tendencies to stay ahead of the curve. I print out the previous 2 years drafts to see if I can find patterns on who/when/where guys like to draft certain players.

Tough to argue against Ovechkin when you need winger spots filled...don't hold your breath for Malkin to get wing eligibility again.

Is this live online or offline? If it's offline I would be trading down from that first pick pretty fast with those league stats - trying to get the 5-7th guys to trade up and give me their 2nd for my 2nd and then get an upgraded pick in another even numbered round - probably 4th round.

I want to draft an elite goalie but not burn my first pick on him - because you just have to take Ovechkin in a positional league. Then with the upgraded 2nd round I will get a pretty decent skater and more than likely I would want to grab another goalie at round 3 - round 4 with an upgrade again back to skaters.

I don't like that number one pick at all in a goalie heavy league like this - totally sucks.

I am totally for getting the stud goalie that you will have no chance at coming back around.

this will be a live draft, and its a yahoo 1 year roto so theres no trading of picks. this is only theoretical, our league isn't set up yet cuz we're waiting for guys to come back from europe but this is just incase i do end up with the first overall pick. i don't think i'll get it tho since for the past 3 years its been the same person getting it lol, i usually end up being lucky and am in the middle (got ovechkin last year with the 6th/12 pick =D) thats not gonna happen this year i can tell you that for sure.
