Roster Call-Ups

When a player is "called up" from the AHL to play in a game, does the NHL team officially put him on the roster before he plays in the game?
If so, when exactly does it happen, and is there any source where you could get this kind of information?
Or is it simply that the mere fact that the team has "announced" to the press that a player has been called up means that they have already been added to the roster?
