haha, no kidding.
i know yahoo's position is that once a player gains eligibility, they won't take it away for the rest of the season. probably why they're so uptight about changing them.

the creator of that frozenpool site posts on here every now and then. you might be able to contract him through his website and work out a deal of some sort... like, you'll direct all your traffic to his site in return for some access into his database or something.

Now, in response to your second "poll" I have this:
1) 8 - doesn't bother me not to have it, but I know many would howl
2) 10 - in my mind something like this must be optional
3) 5 - most of the time it would not be useful to have these guys as wingers anyway because teams generally have more use for a top d-man
4) I think one update a year might be useful, but not crucial.
5) The one I'm in relies on the frozenpool.com numbers as well. We only have F/D eligibility, but occasionally it becomes a question that is answered at the end of the season. For '08-09, we've got Streit as a d-man but Byfuglien has to be a forward because he played more even-strength minutes as a forward than d-man in '07-08.

again, thanx tons for the feedback guys, you have no idea how valuable this kind of thing is to me...when you start building something like this you run into tons of points where you stop to ask yourself 'is that worth implementing' will people want it? Usually the answer is 'yes' but you always have to weight the benefit versus the costs to maintain.
Speaking of which, I will be seeking some testers in a few weeks to help me troubleshoot and propose changes/enhancements. I should have the data model complete and be able to load all of 2007-08 game data sometime this weekend. That's where I'll really be able to identify where things will break during the season. The main issue is how to handle real world trades seamlessly. I won't get into the specifics here but suffice it to say that alot of things can happen that you need to plan for (i.e. two players on the same team with the same name, a player gets traded to a new team and needs to change his number because its in use or retired, etc) so when you're reading data real time off a score sheet its hard to think of everything. I think the best way to handle it is to be proactive, have an admin go in and remap the player to his new team as soon as the trade goes thru, that prevents any issues before they arrive...I may also make some of you guys admins if you're interested and you can help me and my bro with some of these tasks if you're interested.
again thx or the help, I'll keep you posted

Mcgoo, I ran into the same problem last year when I wanted to run a keeper league and wasn't impressed with Yahoo/CBS/etc. I wrote my own from scratch in PHP. I wrote a crawler script that would go through NHL.com's scoresheets and parse out all of the data (goals/assists/ hits/takeaways/giveaways/faceoffs/sog/etc) and put it into a database. From there, I simply used my league's rules for H2H scoring (we do weekly matchups with points assigned to different stats) to calculate scores for the week. Throw in some code to allow players to draft/trade/sign players, and the end result is pretty neat. What you end up with is a fully-functional, entirely automated league along the likes of Yahoo or CBS, except you get stats that even the big guys don't get (hits, takeaways, giveaways, etc.) and you can custom-tailor it to your own league. In addition, you get an easier system to manage drafting and trading picks around, persistence across seasons, and you can really make your league your own. Check out my page at http://pfhl.adrstudios.com (IE unsupported) and let me know if you have any questions, it's been a hell of an experience.

i love how all this is coming out... just awesome.
mcgoo, i am willing to help you in any way i can, whether that be as a tester or admin.
mr_mich... i think i looked at your site last summer and was impressed, but now it seems to me as if you've really improved the design of it. is that true? anyway, i love the offence-opponent_defense-opponent_goalies idea.
one idea that i'd forgotten about that would be cool to see: line-weighting
as in, your first line players (LW-C-RW) are rewarded with 100% of their points, your second liners with 80%, and third liners with 60%. (you could have any number of lines, really).
kinda throws a kink at teams that might be stacked at one position but suck at others.

ultrawhiteness, I learned a lot as I designed/wrote/administered the site. Looking back on some of the code I wrote last summer vs. last month, it's like night and day The offense/defense/goalie idea was a good way for people to pick out valuable players. Mike Komisarek is a beast with hits/blocked shots/takeaways and was a hot commodity as a result...how many leagues can say that? Likewise, guys like Datsyuk and Ovechkin who can put up large numbers of takeaways/shots on goal/hits get an even bigger boost above other guys with similar offensive production. I'll take a 90-point player that hits like a truck and plays defensively sound over a 100-point player that has more giveaways than SOG any day. I do like your line-weighting idea, and might try running that by the league. We're moving into a salary cap structure in the 2009-2010 season based on point/game production of prior seasons, where you'll be allowed to sign someone for up to 3 years with a 10% (ish) raise each year if you want to lock em in. When you know how to automate all of this programming-wise, you have some REALLY fun options available to you.
