In a league where PIM count (each minute is worth slightly more than a shot on goal), G and A are worth the same and bonus for PP points.

It would be the 16th pick and these are the 2 guys I've nailed as being available at my pick based on keepers.

Hossa will also be there and a very, very small chance that Zetts will be, if so Zetts gets my pick, but...

Back to the point - Spezza of Getzlaf?

Here is my summary:

Shots : Little more for Spezza
Points : +10 to 15 for Spezza
PIM : Little more for Getzlaf

For me, Spezza win. Also, Spezza play with Heater and Alfy. Getzlaf with Perry and Kunitz.

Also, I'll take Spezza over Zett...

Okay, I won't argue on a reality level I agree. Spezza is the smart pick.

However, just to give you and idea, using the same point system, Zetts was a fair margin ahead of Spezza last season. Getzlaf was only slightly behind Spezza.

Question is how will all three fare compared to last season?
I would think that Spezza will have similar numbers, while Getzlaf has the potential to break out.

The other "problem" is that I'm a Leaf fan and just don't like Spezza, (but that wouldn't stop me from grabbing Heatley in a heartbeat).

I kinda know you're right, but personally prefer Getzlaf as a player - dumb.

Thanks!

You're right, when it's close, you have to get the player you love to watch. I said no last year to Heater for my Kovy. There is also a guy in my POOL who wants to offer his Heater for Getzlaf, so yes Getzlaf seems to have a lot of fans...

You mentioned Zetterberg being far ahead of Spezza based on your league's points. Remember that Spezza didn't play a full season -- try a prorated Spezza and see how he compares.

In terms of 'breaking out', Spezza and Getzlaf are only two-years apart in age so neither are in their prime as of yet. Zetterberg, at 28, is only entering it so all would be solid picks.

The biggest thing to remember in fantasy sports (and touched on in the latest Dobber Nation) is to always put aside personal biases. You could select favourite players, missing out on better ones, unless the rose (or in this case, blue) tinted glasses come off.

To toss my own past bias into the ring, I used to always go out of my way to select Tuomo Ruutu back before he broke into the NHL. In one-year leagues (no add/drops), I would take him despite knowing the guy was out for half a year. After seeing my winning streak come to an end, I had to rethink my strategies.

Back on track, you'll be getting a solid player no matter whom you select so rest assured.

Funny.

Yeah I know about bias issues... believe me.

But, then again Last season, I went with the smart choice and found Hossa on his first weak season! Luongo on an off season (although that was fine), Vanek in a haze, Semin on IR, Cammilari in a mess of DTD, Avery with a bad wrist, again and again... Andy McDonald in a slump, Souray in IR and Hedjuk in retirement....

Most of those guys were the BPA at my pick so I went with them instead of drafting like I usually do (biased) and finished the worst I've ever done, and when you have Luongo and AO on your team and you come dead last.... it hurts.

Anyway it's a new season an I can laugh about it all now - ha, ha.

But thanks for all this insight. Sometimes it's good to just get opinions and hash it out with other people.

Hey does the fact that Getzlaf is in his 4th season change anything?

I calculated the points projected in Dobber's guide, based on my leagues scoring - Spezza has a slight edge - slight.

Anyone out there that would take Getzlaf over Spezza or am I alone?

I love Getz but the only argument I can make for him over Spezza is that he's not a bandaid boy and you'll get a full season out of him. Sure Spezza can (and has) scored 90 pts in 70 games so its always so tempting to say "well just imagine if he plays a full season! He'll score like 105 pts!" but the truth of the matter is that he very likely won't ever play a full season. So if you play in a H2H league where weekly matchups are key, you could argue that Getz is the better pick because he is consistent and plays every game, but in any other format its hard to pass on Spezza.

Spezza>Getzlaf
Spezza has the potential to be an elite player in the league. Tier 1 right behind the big 3. Getzlaf has the potential to be a tier 2 player not tier 1. IMO they are a full tier apart in terms of talent and this is coming from a Getzlaf supporter. Spezza is the right choice. PIM is the only thing that makes it close and you can find that next round in a Jokinen, Savard, Morrow or in a few rounds in Avery, Carcillo or late in the draft in Neil.

I hate your logic because you are right.

I'm converted. I will put aside my Leaf Nation hate-the-Sens ways and draft Spezza. I will gamble on getting Getz in the next round, if not there will be plenty to choose from - Morrow or Staal maybe...

Thanks again. I have a hard head and it's not too smart sometimes.
