Top 300 Players

Written by Darryl Dobbs
Sunday, 25 February 2007

Ratings are a reflection of a player's trade value in keeper league fantasy hockey pools. They reflect a players predicted points, historical points, injury risk, playoff value, powerplay time, and long-term potential.  Basically, if you are in a keeper league, this is my opinion based on my statistical model of a player's 'trade value'.  Naturally, individual trades would depend on the direction you are taking with your team at the present.

*These ratings are for keeper leagues that a) are strictly points b) include playoffs c) do not require positions (so defensemen and forwards are treated equal). If your league is run differently, take these rankings with a grain of salt.

May Note: Just a few team adjustments and a few player tweaks. This will continue in June. July's will include the draft. August will be the annual "audit", where all players' predictions for 2009-10 will be included in the calculation. The August rankings are always the most accurate per my opinion.

Parise should be higher...And Ovy is worth more than Malkin...he's basically the same, but he's more fun to own.

Anyone who owns Turris would never in a million years trade him for Boedker, simply for the upside. Similarly, anyone who owns Boedker (myself included) would trip over themselves to trade him away to get Turris. Simple as that, dann1717.

your rankings are overall okay but something i do not understand is that Mikkel Boedker has been ranked below Kyle Turris all year long for the first thing Boedker has added more points he is younger he is getting more icetime and he is getting much more positive fedback than turris

Dobber: your explanation does make sense when you put it that way, but at the same time... isn't it more likely that a. radulov will come back sooner than jagr? I feel as though in addition to the small likelihood that he comes back, he'll also be 38-39 (in the 2010-11 season). Is that really worthy of a 105 ranking? I mean what upside would he really have at that point... he's great, but he'll be almost forty... i think 70 points would be an accomplishment... Meanwhile... radulov... who could actually come back next year and play, is much younger, has similar upside, etc... is ranked lower... I do get that this list is a barometer and an approximation of how players are being valued by poolies... so i guess my beef isn't necessarily with the list. My beef is with poolies who think that jagr is more valuable at this point than radulov in a keeper. Lol. Sorry for raising a fuss. =)

Also consider that Dobbers fantasy guide is WAY more acurate with a much better ranking of players. The additional information in the guide also allows you to tailor your own list to fit your fantasy pool. Last year I followed the guide during the draft and won the presidents cup (best overall season), but I lost in the playoffs due to injuries last week to Elias, Semin and Kessel.

I think the whole idea is that Dobber is the expert and these are his predictions. Thats why we visit his site, to get his insight. lol He could be wrong about Jagr and Kesler, or he could be right... Either way, its his prediction and I don't take his prediction lightly. Just one comment... I dont think I could EVER get Mike Green for anything less than a top 5 forward. Green at pos 36 is putting up stats which have not been seen in generations... Kopitar at pos 27 is so-so.

Like I said at the top with my "April" notes - I thought this would help explain the changes, so I added it. I won't be doing that again, because clearly it didn't help at all - this list LOOKS AHEAD TO NEXT YEAR. Jagr has some value again in keeper leagues - he was just traded (in my forecaster pool - so these guys all write fantasy hockey for a living) for two very high draft picks. Mueller will be a superstar and next season he will put up more than this season. Kesler drops not because of what HE can do, but because all the injured players of this year shot back up (because, like I said, I'm looking ahead to next year).

Mueller: Up 2 due to the trade of Jokinen. More ice time means he gets a chance to play the same role as last season. May not get going until next season. I'm interested to hear an answer to the other questions as I'm confused as well especially about Kesler and Jagr

While all of the below posts are legit questions and concerns, i imagine they are somehow explainable. Jagr moving up 93 spots is unfathomable. How a player who is still signed for one more year abroad can move up 93 spots is just plain ridiculous. Makes no sense at all... did i miss some breaking jagr news? Because last i checked, he's not in the NHL, and he's as old as sin. How an old player who's prime is behind him, who's not even in the league, can jump that much is just... wrong.

How does Brad Richards jump up so much when he's out injured and won't be in the playoffs? I mean, sure, he'll be healthy when he returns, so I suppose that might make a difference...but still. As a Richards owner, I'm relatively confused. A couple other players of note that make me wonder if there isn't an early April Fool's joke being run :P (even if the majority of the list seems legit, if a bit unsettled with so many alrge jumps/falls)

Kind of surprised to see Stastny climb 11 spots after a poor month and a season ending injury. How does the spreadsheet justify this anomaly Dobbs?

Quite surprised to see Kesler fall 27 spots. All he's done since the last update in February is consistently put up points (16 in 14 games). I don't think he's a ppg player, but why would he drop now?

You think the acquisition of Williams affects him?
