Top 215 Prospects

Written by Darryl Dobbs
Tuesday, 11 November 2008

Here is the list of Top 200 prospects to own in your deep fantasy pool. This is not a reflection of a player’s actual upside in the NHL, but more of an indicator of his value in pools. It takes into account how many years away from the NHL a player is, as well as his upside. A potential 70-point player who is two years away is more valuable than a potential 80-point player who is four years away. Hockey pools with 300 or more players drafted should have most of the top 50 on the below list on one of the teams. Pools that are even deeper than that, may find some use in the rest of this list. Pools with 250 players may find use in only the top 20 or 30.As with the Fantasy Player list – these players are evaluated only for their offensive potential, and not for their penalty minutes, plus/minus or defense, etc. Goalies are not included in this list either.

My Prospect Ratings are NOT the same as my Fantasy Ratings, although Fantasy Ratings are taken into account. The term 'prospect' is simply my opinion, and I followed no rules to say whether or not the player is actually a prospect other than age (under 27), and the player must belong to an NHL team.

Updated the 10th, of every month.

Key
o = offensive
t = two-way
p = power forward
d = defenseman
os = offensive (small player)

OUT NOW: Dobber's Fantasy Prospects Report 2009

Just $12.95, or $5 with a fantasy guide. The lowdown on all the top prospects - upsides, ETA, odds of cutting it...everything you need!

April/May/June graduates (***NOTE***: some tough calls - some I decided to keep for at least another month): Boedker (3), Winchester (63), Clutterbuck (90), Bogosian (158)

NOTE: By popular demand, I have separated defensemen and forwards! Please look compare the ratings as much as the rankings before being too critical. (i.e. some may complain that Del Zotto is ranked well behind Lashoff...but if you compare the "ratings" you will see that the difference is razor thin). Also understand that for the next two months, looking at the historical rankings in each chart will be inaccurate, as it used to include both forwards and defensemen in the same chart.

Dobber, out of the top 5 defensemen prospects, which 2 have the highest upside for points? I own Goli and Piet in my keeper league (which your advice helped me win) Thanks a lot!!

Did you not get the prospects report bluejays? Also - no draftees are eligible for this list. Myers - take into account his value in the eyes of poolies: I may think he's 6 years away, but others do not. That boosts his value.

Thanks Dobber awesome. Dmen, I only hope Stralman gets going this year. I really listened to you drafting him well and need him to pay off. -Kindl is said to be 3 yrs away, yet so high? Basically Kulikov and Ellis are around 3 yrs away too and their upside is just as good, yet there nowhere to be seen. -Harrold is bust. He had his chance and blew it. -You said PK S. will need several yrs before he hits 40, yet Del Zotto is close and should hit numbers fast in NY. -Myers is 6-7 yrs away from hitting fantasy numbers yet rated so high? -Ericsson, Chorney, Corrente will they ever run a PP unit? -Ellis, Kulikov, Gardiner could. Is there that much diff in readiness? Just a few notes....

Dobber, thanks for the update on Yannick Weber. I figured it was an oversight. I'm also glad I stashed Palushaj away; he continues to move up on your list and seems to be a good fit for a team that is so weak on RW. Great prospects report!!! I can't believe serious keepers contemplate a $12 investment.

McBain is too. Stralman is ready to give you numbers this year. But as I said in the notes, his "rating" is almost equal to the other two you mention. As for Bashkirov (from a forum question), his "rating" is pretty close to 142 and pretty close to 92 on this list. He compares closely with the players in that range.

The thing that wows me is your love for Anton Stralman. Above Pietrangelo and Karlsson means you must think he is going to be a hell of a producer in the future. Stralman has never really put up really good numbers and was a 200+ draft pick. I see you put Pietrangelo and Karlsson's upside higher on the Prospect Report but Stralman was ranked higher in that too. What makes Stralman so high on this list?

Thanks guys. Weber is profiled on the updated Prospects Report, and he ranked 38 amongst defensemen, which is still pretty good. However, I made a small oversight on him on this update - he probably should have eeked into the Top 30 and he will for next month.

This list wows me everytime. I'm still going to buy the prospect report, but getting a list like this for free is just too good to be... If only the other guys in my pool didn't know about it I would pay for just this list. Noticing that Benn is getting a lot of credit for the Mem. Cup. No surprise about Leino and every other Det prospect moving up. The one surprise to me is Eberle jumping up that much. A toast to the host.

Hey Dobber, I noticed Yannick Weber was not in the prospect report or on the top 30 d-men list. In your opinion, does this mean his recent playoff success and rookie yr in hamilton was a fluke, or is it just a reflection of the amount of competition amongst prospects (Weber, Subban, McDonaugh) on the mtl blue-line? Anyway, thanks for splitting fwds/d-men. This is a lot easier to follow.

I just read these (I like to read them later in the month, and brace myself for the onslaught haha). Sir Knight - right you are, that was an oversight for the last year or so - he can't be considered "small", so that helps his rating a bit. Leefuyung - by coincidence, Maxwell has moved into the Top 40. I adjust things as I go through the Prospects Report, so the most accurate rating chart in my books is the one that comes out in June.

Now's the time to go after Hensick - I have no doubt that he is cheap in fantasy leagues. Dirt cheap.

I also appreciate the lists but disagree sometimes (it IS subjective after all) - case in point: after the extremely disappointing season Hensick had I find it interesting that he's actually moved up in the past 3 months. I would have thought he would have dropped big time. As always, thanks for the list, Dobber.

hammer_nuts - it's not always about his "chance" but also a little about his value in keeper leagues. He's still owned in two of mine, so he still has some value from the perspective of the typical keeper owner.

Thanks for the insight Dobs. What about the 2 lists? Maybe a top 150 for forwards and top 50 for D? You have to admit, it would solve alot of problems and be VERY helpful to the keeper poolie!

Ditto what Hockaholic says. Good list, definetly more "on" than "off". Rob Shrimp, however, should be deleted from this list and added to whatever list has Alex Daigle, Pavol Brendl, Slava Chistov, etc. Shrimp has no grit, no speed, no defence, no chance...

Oilers Rock - not in two of my leagues - we don't want defensemen. Your league is not the only one on Earth, you know. Please read my guidelines before commenting in the future. Honestly, it's the same thing every month with you ;) Hockaholic - THANK YOU. Nice to hear that once in awhile. Blue Jays - You are right, Trukno sucks. It's time for me to move him down. You are wrong, however, about Wilson. I will 'think Toews', just as you suggest. Two players who will never get 85 points - Wilson and Toews. Their value is in their two-way play and their leadership. Points-wise, they will eventually get as high as the low 80s. Kane MIGHT get Toews up to 90, but Wilson has no Kane to look forward to.

Mattias Karlsson in Bingo will be given an opportunity with the Sens before Patrick Wiercioch. M. Karlsson is 4th in D scoring (51 p in 71 games) in the AHL, and the leading rookie. His brother Erik has a bit more talent and will make the club next year with about 30 points, upside of 45 to 55.

My 2 cents. Colin Wilson gets absolutely no respect. He was a finalist for the Hobbey Baker and a moster 2 way C. Think Toews. Those guys will averge between 70-80 pts in a few years. Plus Nsh has no one at that spot that would challenge him for #1 job. Jack Skille #29 should be moved way down. He is a fringe 3rd liner and has missed his boat. The competition in Chi town is hard enough for him to get a spot yet alone be top 6 fantasy worthy. S.Trukhno #50 has now had 2 straight dissapointing years. He is not even on the Oilers radar. Old news, huge bust. With the signing of Coulston, Shannon is here to stay and is a for sure lock for 60+ next year. CC loves him. RE: Def to frwds rankings - SOLUTION - 2 Prospect lists. BINGO

This may be off topic, but I just want to say it is like Christmas every 10th of the month when I get to open up the Top 200 prospects Rankings. I may not always exactly agree with all your ratings but you definitely have had a success rate which is hard to argue with.

do you not agree that owning Alex Goligoski(53),Alex Pietrangelo(106),Zach Bogosian(184) would be more bennifical than Benoit Pouliot(21),Gilbert Brule(32), Rob Schremp(34)( the ultamite fantsy question would you trade the 1st 3(if you owned them) for the second 3 ?? and having Green(44) who has 64 pts in 60 games is more valuable than Hemsky (22) who has 57pts in 62 games. so its not that I "need you to explain your lists" just seems that the rankings are (with these players ) a little suspect in my view.

Kyle Beach - it will be six years before he gets to 50 points. Good prospect, the wait is too long. Oilers rock - I can't keep explaining myself about my lists. Full instructions are at the top.

I wonder why your rating of D-men are so low (on all lists) I don't know about your leauge, but Mike green based on 82 games would be the run away MVP if you project his #'s over an 82 game schedual he is 21 points clear of the next best D-Man there are only a hand full of "offensive " d-men so these guys are like gold. just like the saying "Defence wins championships" rings true for poolies as well, and having d-men so low in your lists doesn't make a lot of sense. I think guys like Alex Goligoski(53),Alex Pietrangelo(106),Zach Bogosian(184) would all be more valuable in fantasy leauges than guys like Benoit Pouliot(21),Gilbert Brule(32), Rob Schremp(34). I my leauge these 3 forwards are not even owned.

How can a top 300 prospect list not include Kyle Beach? You have got to be kidding me!
Top 200....he needs to be on it!

Earl - I didn't know that. I wonder how that slipped through? January was a crazy month I guess. Dadonov - I downgraded his upside so he slipped out of the top 200. He ranks 278. Makarov - you sound as if he's been trying forever. He tried out in one camp with the expectation that he would not make it, but just to show is stuff. He showed it and he wowed them. This fall he will show it again and he should make the team.

Dobber, R. Earl is no longer a Leaf. Plus how come E. Dadonov did not make your top 200?

Will we ever see Makarov make the Hawks? I traded him and my 1st to move down what was 5 spots in the draft and got voracek out of it...a month later I'm actually moving 1 spot down(3rd to 4th) with a month left. As a fantasy prick I can only hope he's a complete bust, the 4th lands me Tavares as we use a lottery system based on the NHL and the other owner goes mental due to losing Taveres and Voracek for a top 5 pick.

Azevedo - ranked 318. Lesser chance of making the NHL, but high upside if he does get there. Regardless, we won't see him in the NHL putting up fantasy worthy points for four years at least. If being MVP of the OHL is still not getting him selected in the higher rounds of a draft as a 20-year-old, then no matter how great he is, teams just aren't taking him as seriously as he should. And yes - I saw him play for the Rangers a few times and personally I see nothing wrong with his game. But I need to go by how seriously the team looks at him. Late being drafted, not even a mention in THN's Future Watch, etc...

Was wondering why Benn and Boychuk were so low, nice to see a big jump out of them this month.

You guys are reading the old chart. That was February. This is updated to include Tlusy's hot month. These articles are only updated, not posted new - so commenting here is not a good idea (i.e. the comments will stay here for a year or more and make you look bad ;) )

Ya, I would have envisioned Tlusty rocketing up. I think he's been averaging close to 3 points per game with 32 in his last 13 games.

Tlusty falling from 15 to 39 is a bit surprising, seeing as he is coming off player of the month honors in the AHL. Puck

Hey Dobber, why is Aaron Palushaj (179) ranked so low? You're very high on him in the 08 prospect report and he's been at or near the top in NCAA scoring all year. Am I missing something?
