Top 100 Keeper League Goalies – July

2016-07-21

The top 100 goalies to own in fantasy hockey keeper leagues, July edition. New faces/new places…

These rankings are based on keeper leagues, but how much they can help you this year plays a big part – more so than with skaters. This is because the goaltending position fluctuates so much. One day you're a starter, the next day a rookie stud steals your job, the day after that the hotshot rookie gets injured and the job is yours again. Injury proneness and how much a goalie has to share the net also plays a significant role.

Because of how the position fluctuates, it's best to compare goalies within their tier. One Tier 1 goalie is as good as another in terms of risk/reward balance.

This month – Allen, Elliott, Bernier with adjustments. The 2016 draftees were added, though because each one is at least four years away only one (barely) cracked the Top 100…

I wonder how many would draft Holtby ahead of Price in a multicat league. No way I would trade Price for Holtby. I assume injury risk has put Holtby ahead of Carey.

    • Dobber 2016-07-21 at 12:30

Definitely. That and the ‘wins’ category.
For the record, I’d trade Price for Holtby in a heartbeat. More wins, less injury risk.

Not only that but Washington has a way better chance at consistently winning than Montreal does.

Pekka had a bad year in 2015 but with the addition of pekka and Nashville seeming like a real contender, why is he so low? Is this a matter of him being older and not worth keeping for the future or what?

    • Dobber 2016-07-21 at 13:20

It’s a matter of trust. Go here:
      http://dobberhockey.com/players/pekka-rinne

In the Goalie Calculator window, click “Oct 1st” for the first box and “Dec 20th” for the second box. Now look at those numbers. That’s 28 games in and he was barely backup-worthy. How many fantasy teams did he ruin there? Can’t completely trust him.

      • Daniel Sandler 2016-07-21 at 13:39

Can you give a little more insight then into how you calculate the ratings? If Rinne is only low because of trust I get it, but I think he is in line for a big year with the addition of Subban and getting back to form like he was in 2010, ’12, ’14 (notice a pattern there?)
Also, if Rinne’s rating is lower than it otherwise would be because of trust or stretches of bad play or just a bad season, how does being in a time-share affect things? I think MAF and MM are great goalies, but only one of them can start >50% of their games. How does that lack of possibilities for wins make them still within 5 points of Jake Allen?

        • Dobber 2016-07-21 at 15:01

I don’t think Rinne is in line for a big year at all. How on earth is adding Subban and subtracting Weber make them a sudden powerhouse? I don’t want him on my team. He’s not exactly young anymore and he still has some injury risk.
Allen is a Band-Aid Boy and that drives his value down.
MAF and MM are both still potential 35+ win goalies. These are keeper ratings and whichever one goes to a new team (expansion?) will get the net to himself – if not this year then next.

So this is something I’ve always wondered since being a fan of your work and the site as a whole, how far into the future are you thinking with “keeper” rankings? I mean, Hellebuyck is the highest rated WPG goalie in your rankings but right now it doesn’t seem like he’ll play more than 30 games because he could be in the AHL all year barring injury

          • Dobber 2016-07-21 at 15:16

I don’t go beyond three years, generally, because in keepers most players are traded/turned over within 2-3 years. That’s why you don’t see any ’16 draftees on here and the ’14 draftees are only now finally making their presence felt deep on the list.
Hellebuyck will get that net, he’s their best goalie. And Pavelec gets hurt a lot

          • Dobber 2016-07-23 at 23:25

I took a closer look and it turns out that after 46 games his numbers were even worse. For the second date, use Feb 13. He had a .902 SV% after 46 games! Yikes

Dobber – any chance you could make a goalie prospect list just like you do for forwards and D? There isn’t a lot out there and you seem to really follow the goalies. If not, could you recommend some sites that do rank prospect goalies? Thanks and keep up the great work.

    • Dobber 2016-07-21 at 15:02

It’s in the works. But it’s been in the works for a year now so I wonder if that project ever gets done ;)

Do you think Murray is that much better than Vasilevskiy long term? Both are in a similar situation of being the presumptive starter in 2017/18 but stuck behind an established starter for the time being. Better stats from Murray by far in the backup role last year but is it that big of a gap long term?

    • Dobber 2016-07-21 at 15:05

I like Murray’s situation a ‘little’ bit better than Vas’s situation. Vas was supposed to steal starts last year and didn’t. What did he do to suddenly take more starts this year? I don’t see it. I see another 25 games. Again.
Now look at what Murray did to steal more starts this year – he won a Cup!
So with him 40 games or 50 games or even 55 games this year is within the realm of possibility

      • David Goodburn 2016-07-21 at 19:01

Thanks Dobber. Appreciate the insight and agree.

The other side is that bishop is a much more attractive trade option than fleury so Vas may get a shot at a starter job first, assuming another goalie doesn’t come back to TB. Though Stevie Y has been known to hold on to his assets lol.

A bit too hypothetical to influence the rankings much but a minor factor in guessing starts.
