Saturday’s NHL Picks Returns for Another Season!

Coretti's back for another season – picking the best bets to win Saturday's NHL contests…

Welcome back! Today brings an exciting slate of games as there will be a whopping 14 matchups across the NHL. Last season I finished around 70% which is very profitable and I look to continue my strong capping heading into the 2016-17 season. The beginning of the NHL season is always difficult to wager on as many teams can surprise or let down (refer to Kings). However, the start of the season is also an opportunity to capitalize on value and teams that may not be getting the respect they deserve by Proline or sportsbooks. Before I begin I want to give a shout-out to Goalie Post as they are always bang on with their goalie projections which is HUGE when it comes to sports wagering. Also, feel free to follow me on Twitter for all your sports wagering needs. Buckle up and get ready… it’s about that time to #GETTHATMONEY.

Record: –

Tampa Bay @ Buffalo (1pm ET)

With Robin Lehner getting injured in his season opener, Chad Johnson gets the call here. The Sabres fought valiantly in their season opener and Jack Eichel nabbed his first with a beauty on the PP. Although, it wasn’t enough as the Sabres fell to the Senators 3-1. The Sabres looked solid late in the game as they started to apply pressure on the Sens and had a potential game-tying goal called back due to an offside. The Bolts started their season off with an overtime win versus the Flyers in their opener on Thursday night. Tampa Bay will get a routine win here as they are licking their chops with Johnson slated to start. This isn’t the greatest spot for Johnson as in his only game versus the Bolts he got lit up like a Christmas tree allowing five goals on 28 shots. Life without Lehner could be rough for the Sabres and this matinee fair could get ugly. Take the Bolts.

Key Stat: Lightning are 4-0 in the last 4 meetings.

Pick: TB – Visitor Team Win – V

New Jersey @ Washington (7pm ET)

No Nicklas Backstrom, no problem. The Capitals will open their season tonight against the offensively anemic Devils. New Jersey will be playing the tail end of a B2B as they dropped their home opener versus the Jets last night 3-1. It hasn’t been reported as to who will start this one for the Devils as Schneider got the call last night. Keith Kinkaid could very well get the start and if so I like the Caps even more. So the Devils can’t score, they’re playing the tail end of a B2B, they’re on the road and going up against a Vezina candidate in Braden Holtby on his opening night. All of this does not bode well for the Devils. Add in the fact that the Devils have been outscored by the Caps 11-3 in their past 3 games… the Devils could easily get blanked here and lose by more than a goal. Take the Caps.

** UPDATE ** Keith Kinkaid will get the START… thanks Goalie Post!

Key Stat: Devils are 1-4 in the last 5 meetings.

Pick: Washington – Home Team Win – H

Edmonton @ Nashville (7pm ET)

If Connor McDavid was in tough against the Blues in his first NHL game… wait till he gets a whiff of Shea Weber. McDavid and the Oilers put up a decent fight against the Blues losing 3-1 on Thursday night. The Oilers lone goal was actually an own goal that was banked off a Blues player on the PP. Nonetheless, the Oilers played a strong game considering it was in St. Louis against a deep team. The Predators got a 2-1 win to start their season off against the lowly Canes on Thursday night. Pekka Rinne was his usual stud self-putting up 25 saves and nearly having a shutout if not being scored on late in the third. The Predators should put up a similar performance tonight versus the Oilers. If they can contain McDavid as the Blues did, which is a tall task, they will get the W. I think Weber and co will have a game plan to limit Connor and the Predators will roll in this one. Take the Preds.

Key Stat: Oilers are 1-4 in the last 5 meetings in Nashville.

Columbus @ New York (8pm ET)

Why am I taking the Rangers? Henrik Lundqvist.  Coach Vigneault made it clear that King Henrik would get both starts versus the Blue Jackets this weekend. Henrik has been sublime so far to start the season rocking a .940 SV%. What is more impressive is the opposition that he’s faced in these two road games versus a potent Blackhawks and Blue Jackets offense. If you read the DobberHockey Pre-Season Experts Panel 2015-16 piece you would know that I really like the Rangers as I have predicted them to win Lord Stanley this year. The Rangers have a fantastic mix of talent at every position and I fully expect guys like Chris Kreider and Mats Zuccarello to breakout this year. Speaking of that, Zuccarello did tally two goals last night as the Rangers squeaked a 4-2 win versus the Blue Jackets late in the third. Both of the teams are solid but I have to take the Rangers here.

Key Stat: Rangers are 4-1 in their last 5 Saturday games.

Pick: New York – Home Team Win – H

St. Louis @ Minnesota (8pm ET)

Not going to lie… this pick is purely on gut. My brain is telling me to take the Wild here. Minnesota has looked solid throughout the preseason and they handled the Blues rather well in the post-season eliminating them in six games this past spring. However, that is exactly the reason why I will take St. Louis tonight. I think that early round exit is still fresh in the minds of the Blues and they will come out hard tonight. Additionally, Devan Dubnyk did look at little shaky versus the Avalanche a few nights ago allowing four goals on 23 shots. Jake Allen will get the start for the Blues and he will have to put up a solid performance as Brian Elliott got the W in the season opener. Take the Blues here in what should be an awesome game to watch.

Key Stat: Road team is 4-1 in the last 5 meetings.

Pick: St. Louis – Visitor Team Win – V

Pittsburgh @ Arizona (10pm ET)

The Penguins were stonewalled in their first game versus the Stars being blanked 3-0 on the road. Antti Niemi went full beast mode making 37 saves for the shutout. Phil Kessel is still probably waking up in cold sweats thinking of the Finnish net minder as he was robbed several times at point blank. The Yotes got a surprising 4-1 home win last night versus the Kings. Although, Mike Smith did have an outstanding game as Arizona was outshot 41-22. It hasn’t been reported as to who will start for the Yotes but regardless I like the Pens here. Crosby should have a multi-point game and Kessel will light the lamp after nearly doing it 3-4 times on Thursday. The Yotes just played last night and the Pens should be motivated to get the W here after being shut out in their opener. Usually, a 4-1 win versus the Kings would scare me… but to be honest the Kings and especially Jonathan Quick look like mediocre so far so I can’t judge based on that. Take the Pens.

Key Stat: Penguins are 5-2 in the last 7 meetings.

Pick: Pittsburgh – Home Team Win – V

When I glanced over this article on the front page, I thought it read "Cobretti returned for another reason."!!!  Now that would have been a good article.   Not that this isn't a good article in its own right…  :)
