This is simply pulling defensemen out of the regular 'Rankings' list and adding a few more at the bottom. Ratings are a reflection of a player's trade value in 'rollover' fantasy hockey pools. They reflect a players predicted points, historical points, injury risk, playoff value, powerplay time, and long-term potential.  Basically, if you are in a keeper league, this is my opinion based on my statistical model of a player's 'trade value'.  Naturally, individual trades would depend on the direction you are taking with your team at the present.

what is with Dobb's continual hatred for Ehrhoff? I don't get it. 44 and 42 points the last 2 years, he was their best plus d-man last season, and yet he's still ranked below guys like Cam Barker and Ian White? crazy

DMen
Dobber...nice list...I especially like the new prospects moving up on the list. Rather than take a 25 point Dman I can go for it and try to pick a young stud who is on the rise. Your focus on prospects and development should be right on the mark for many of these. I expect you will get lots of grief for this as many still have the old steady eddies on their teams, me I have Doughty and Myers already...smilies/grin.gif

Myers seems too low for the kind of season he just put up. He's below OEL, and OEL hasn't even played a game in the NHL!

Chara in a free fall???
Why does Chara continue to fall in the rankings? Last year wasn't his best, but he was injured...is he not poised to become a big time D man once again?

Statistic bias
In looking at the rankings it appears that up and comers have a larger increase in ranking than the tried and true from last year? I don't know the formula just a guess looking at the change from July to August; where not that many changes to team location by the top 100..just looks like a bias. thanks

Jovo?
Why no Jovo? I know he is aging, but he is only 2 weeks older than Dan Boyle. Jovo is also injury prone, but his fantasy relevance is still higher than a lot of the guys further down the list.

I don't have as high regard for Cumiskey as many people.

I add 5 to the ratings because otherwise the dmen at the bottom of this list would have a negative value, which doesn't look nice. Just aesthetics.

Ratings +5.0 over Top 300
Why is the rating on your top defensemen 5.0 higher than on the Top 300 for the same player? For example Duncan Keith is 80.7 on here, yet 75.7 on Top 300?

DAL D
Dobber, since you have no Dallas Dmen in your top 100... do you feel that Niskanen will not rebound from his bad season?

I obtained him at a low cost and figured he would rebound like Tom Gilbert. Bad years.. just need more ice time and less competition.

Is it just me or is Jay Bouwmeester the most overrated (fantasy) defenceman around?
I've held this guy for 4 years now and I cringe every time I look at the box scores!
How is he a top 10 Fantasy D???

is this list only for this season? Why is Andrei Markov ranked 34? Behind Visnovsky? Are you kidding? If this is just for this year, then fine, I buy that with the injury, but if this is a list of the top defenseman to own in a keeper, he should be much higher....you have Scott Niedermayer at 22 for crying out loud....just looking for justification.

Im glad you hyped up Goligoski so much, really made me go out and trade for a draft pick so i could scoop him up in my keeper draft, his start has been money, and now he is the #2 ranked dman, love it!

Does Dobber have a hate on for Sheldon Souray?
I really don't understand how Souray end's up at the 40th best fantasy D-man. Is the likes of Jovanovski, McCabe, Zidlicky, and Pitkanen really a better fantasy option? I dont think so.

I'd probably take all of those guys over souray. in a points leauge (as the rankings are based on), souray isn't really that valuable; especially considering the fact that he's played what... 2 full NHL seasons?

Obviously if your league counts goals, he gets a boost in value, but the above ratings don't use that breakdown... strictly points, souray is and injury prone, 40-50 point guy. All those guys you mentioned are at least as good, and most of them are younger or more durable (arguments could possibly be made against this). Hence the higher rating.

Weber?
I thought Coburn would blow up last season because he was basically loaded with ice time but he didn't. That when it was just him and Timmonen. Now that Pronger's in the picture, I dunno. I think he's still a good grab for the future.

Why is Weber ranked so low?
