Default Interesting Stat says John Mitchell sucks

Maybe I'm giving this odd "delta" statistic more credence than it deserves. But I guess I like it because it indicates something I've been saying (for a long long time) to anyone who will listen... John Mitchell sucks. He's got this elusive way of flying under the radar because he skates fairly well, and he stick handles pretty well. So he's fooled alot of folks and i can understand why.
But he's consistently been one of the worst minus players for the Leafs. He's not physical. And he doesn't produce offence. So I don't care how he somehow makes himself look decent out there. And I don't care how nice a guy he is in interviews. He still sucks.

Enough rambling from me. Here's the "Delta" stat.

It's an interesting article but I certainly don't think you need stats to prove that dude sucks.

I personally have no problem as a 4th line centre.

is that stat trying to tell me that Kessel was a better player in 07/08 than he was last year?

or that Grabovski is light years better than anyone else on the team?

The point is - why waste a contract on someone who isn't a top 6 player, and isn't a competent bottom 6 guy either. If he was responsible defensively, or added a physical dimension, I'd give him a pass, and say ok, let him center the 3rd or 4th line. But he does nothing overly well, so why waste a contract on him.

It suggests that Grabbo is on the ice alot when the team is generating more scoring chances than it gives up. I would agree with that, even though he's not as good a finisher as Kessel.
And yes, I would also agree that Kessel would have been better on the differential (chances to score vs. chances given up) as a Bruin. He was playing more minutes on a lousier team last season.

He's making 725,000. What's to complain about? Who else do you want to center the 4th line? For that price, the only other option would be a guy with no NHL experience.
