Thank Goodness Pens are Quiet – July 3, 2009

Regarding the forums (I'll bold it this time, to help slow the emails I'm getting): Patience please. Consider them shut down for a few hours. When they start working again, you will love the speed!

Ryan Smyth has been dealt to the Kings for Quincey and Preissing – analysis will be up shortly. Also Ryane Clowe has signed with the Sharks.

A note about the forums – if you have wonky things happening – like logging in, or weirdness in any other way – we are just transferring the forum to another program called vbulletin (like HFboards, for example) so just be patient and don't panic. Thank you! Dobber

Before everyone gets carried away and froths at the mouth – Chicago's mistake was minor and nothing will come of it. The wording of TSN's article is quite leading. I won't be mentioning it again. I hope.

Rick Nash has signed an eight-year extension worth $7.8 million per season.

The Wild have signed Shane Hnidy.

I was out of the loop for a couple of hours, so there are some updates that most of you probably already know about. The Pens have re-signed Ruslan Fedotenko to a one-year deal, the Canucks have signed Mikael Samuelsson to a three-year deal, the Rangers have signed Ty Arnason, Corey Locke and P.A. Parenteau. Fedotenko expect more of the same. Arnason – he's almost played his way out of the NHL. I will post an article on the Samuelsson signing shortly.

Mark Recchi and Teemu Selanne have indicated that they are playing their final season.

The Penguins have lost Satan and Sykora – and really, one or the other played in the playoffs so they count as one player, so let's call them "Satora". So they lose Satora, Scuderi, Gill, Boucher, Garon, Zigomanis and Fedotenko and they add Rupp. People are getting restless about their lack of activity. Myself, I have two keeper leagues with a lot – and I mean a lot – invested in how the Pens do. I hitched my horses to the Pittsburgh wagon three or four years ago and am now seeing nice dividends. That being said, I don't want to see them add a single forward or goaltender. I want them to sign one defensive rearguard and that is it. Why? Because I want John Curry, Alex Goligoski, Eric Tangradi and Luca Caputi on this team in the fall. So please Mr. Shero – only replace Scuderi. There is nothing of Scuderi caliber, but Paul Mara is a decent option, as are Morris, Backman and Boynton.

By the way, the Penguins are still talking to Fedotenko and Sykora.

In a minor move yesterday, the Flames signed  Staffan Kronwall.

The Rangers signed undrafted 6-4 junior forward Chris Chappell. I don't see him getting to the show.

Rick Nash and the Jackets are drawing closer to a deal. The buzz is that it is in the 10-year range.

Quick note to Atlanta, who now have Kubina and Antropov in the fold: I'm not sure if picking up the leftovers of the Leafs of 2007/08 is the right direction to go here. Even the Leafs themselves are frantically trying to get away from that direction!

One player I forgot to analyze in the Antropov deal – we'll call him the "forgotten one" – is Rich Peverley. I added this note to the Antropov article: "Rich Peverley had a fantastic time in Atlanta, with 35 points in 39 games. He still makes a good dark horse, but Antropov pushing him down the depth chart makes him a little more of a long shot. I am still comfortable with him getting over 55 points this season, but I doubt we'll see him get to 70 like his pace suggests."
